Bathalegala (Bible Rock)

Bathalegala is a stunning rock in Aranayake, Kegalle district in Sri Lanka. Bathalegala was also called bible rock in Sri Lanka during the British period as its appearance is quite similar to that of an open book or pulpit.


Some of them said that Bathalegala remembered Mount Sinai cause it was also bound with historical and religious significance with ascending the mountain to reach the summit by summit. However, bible rock has been a notable landmark for centuries, especially during the colonial period when it served as a navigational point for travelers.


Bathalegala is famous for its biodiversity cultural value and of course its wonderful moderate hiking experience. With its unique shape, it can seem to different angles from one area to another. Mostly it's flat-topped rock but as far as many areas it can seem bread-shaped, brick-block-shaped, or mountaineer-shaped.


Bathalegala is 2618 feet above sea level and stands 798 meters. The rock shared its borders with surrounding other mountains and rocks like Ura Kanda, Ambuluwawa, Uthuwankanda, and Dewanagala. According to folks and legends, locals said that the rock was used as a lookout point during ancient times due to its strategic vantage point. Some believe that Bathalegala was used as a hub to alarm and monitor conscious things through bonfires to locals to locals regarding Portuguese in Portuguese era Sri Lanka who controlled the seaside and lowlands in the early 16th to 17 centuries. At present the top of the rock is included with a place to worship in the ancient temple with a small pagoda blended with spiritual significance.


Bathalegala has its own adventurous experience. For hiking nature lovers and hikers can reach Bathalegala through several paths. It's situated in Hathgampola town and can access to mainly Hathgampola Aranayake Road Millangoda -Aranayake Road and Lambutuwa -Aranayake Road. It takes nearly two hours to hike to the top of the rock but believe you'll never regret it cause you can get a mesmerizing view of its unique beauty from the top of the rock. Not only Aranayaka's greenish area you can also see the Knuckles Ridge, Kadugannawa, Allagalla, and other mountains from far. So it's a panoramic thrilling and wow experience to add to your bucket list sure.
