This is not very popular among tourists, but trust us, it’s one of the mesmerizing and breathtaking waterfalls located in Aranayaka, Sri Lanka.
According to the rural folks, one of the kings went to battle and promised his soldiers that his wives would wave white flags over the hills once he won. Unfortunately, there was foul play, and his wives, who waited for him atop the mountain, thought he was dead. All of the wives committed suicide by jumping over the falls with their horses. The name Asupini is derived from ‘Asu’ (horse) and ‘pini/pani’ (jump), meaning the horses jumped over the falls.
Talking about the surroundings, this waterfall includes a plunge pool and misty rocks with a stunning view. Even today, some believe the strange noise of the water is a memory of the princesses’ grief, as they are said to still show their sorrow through the water.
